On Jan. 8,1806, Captain William Clark, Captain Meriwether Lewis, Sacagawea, and members of the Corps of Discovery descended the south side of Tillamook head and came upon the skeleton of a whale along side this creek in what is now Cannon Beach. They had come to trade with the Tillamook tribe living along side the creek for whale blubber and oil. Clark named the creek “Ecola Creek”. “Ecola” is the Chinook tribe’s word for whale.
